Legacy to the Community

Watch and listen to how the permanent Endowment Fund will continue to support us long into the future. Ongoing financial support for Beartooth is critical to protecting our legacy gift to the community.
The mission of the Beartooth Billings Clinic Foundation is to support the hospital and clinic and their activities. The Foundation was formed in 1987 to re-purchase Beartooth Hospital and Health Center (named Carbon County Memorial Hospital at the time) from an interim out-of-state owner. Through broad community participation, $600,000 was raised for this purpose. At that point, this was the largest philanthropic undertaking in the history of Red Lodge. In 1993, the Foundation received 501 (c) (3) non-profit status and within a few years had an active board.
First annual Hospital Ball, a country-style hoedown, was held in 1996, and with that event, the Beartooth Ball tradition was born. In recent years, the Ball has taken shape as an Austrian Brew Fest, a MASH Bash, and a 1950s "Grease" Ball.
A large bequest of $600,000 launched the Foundation’s investments in 1997, and since that time, many gifts, including a number of gift annuities allowing the donor significant benefits under the Montana Endowment Tax Credit, have helped the Foundation grow. A series of part-time coordinators/directors served the Foundation in the late 1990s; the first full-time executive director was hired in 2001.
In 2007, the Foundation board and staff turned their full focus on launching a Capital Campaign to help finance a new hospital/clinic facility for Carbon County. Within three years, more than $3 million in private donations had been received, as well as $1 million in grants. On November 18, 2010, the new facility opened its doors and welcomed its first patients.
The Foundation's next phase of growth is an Endowment Campaign. Taking the long view, an endowment is a permanent fund that stays in place perpetually, providing interest income for special projects, equipment, programs, and services in line with the organization's mission.
