The Beartooth Billings Clinic Public Health Department knits together numerous rural communities by establishing common themes of health awareness, disease prevention, and access to care.  By monitoring communicable diseases and overseeing immunization programs for all age ranges, the Public Health Department has become a visible resource for many people who may not have an ongoing relationship with a healthcare provider.  For information on any of the following services or programs, please call 406-446-9941.

Prevention and detection:  Public Health investigates communicable diseases such as STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases), Salmonella, MRSA (an antibiotic-resistant strain of staph), and Hepatitis.

Immunizations: This is a key area where Public Health protects the well-being of area communities.  Various types of immunizations are provided to infants, children, adolescents, and adults. Immunization records are also maintained with Public Health.

Prenatal and postnatal care:  Maternal and child health are safeguarded through Childbirth Classes, education for pregnant and postpartum women, home visits to newborns and mothers, and breastfeeding education.

Childbirth Education:  These weekly (Thursday evening) classes are offered in five-week sessions in May, September, and January.  To register, please call 446-9941 or 860-0375.

Chronic Illness:  Public Health provides education and guidance for those coping with diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, chronic/obstructive pulmonary disease, and obesity.

Air Quality and Safety:  Public Health provides information, education, and tools through the Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Program, the Clean Indoor Air Act, Tobacco Free Parks and Outdoor Recreational Areas, and Tobacco Free Schools.

School Nurse for Seven Schools in Carbon County:  The school nurse helps coordinate vision screenings (945 in the past year), referrals to optometrists, and kindergarten roundup health assessments.  The School Nurse is also resposible for the annual review of Carbon County student immunization records for compliance with state school immunization requirements; yearly reporting to the State of Montana on immunization rates and compliance; and conducts vaccine clinics, head lice checks, and health related in-services.
